“MARGUERITE”

Marguerite was a former model who adored the world of fashion and design. She gave it up in her early twenties when she married Tom and they decided to start a family. She brought her dramatic style into her home, transforming it into a vision of balance, beauty, and design. The wisdom she used to take care of her skin and body was a legacy she taught to her three beautiful daughters. Totally devoted to Tom and the girls, Marguerite felt it was her duty to raise them in the best possible health and lifestyle. Over the years, using her great intuition, she learned as much as she could about “self-help” and healthy eating. Her friends only half-jokingly called her a “self-proclaimed, self-taught, self-help guru.”

When her youngest daughter entered college, Marguerite found herself overwhelmed by the “empty nest” syndrome. The girls were gone, now in various stages of their education, and Tom was working very late hours in his firm due to economic downturns and staff reductions. Marguerite’s own identity had been submerged for years in the role of archetypal wife and mother, and now she found herself alone most of the time.

Then, tragedy struck: Tom had a sudden, massive heart attack at work and died. In total shock, Marguerite struggled to regain her balance, rediscover her own unique individuality, and nurture her daughters through this horrific time.

Leaning on all her knowledge and talents to develop her own income, she started a freelance career in illustration, writing, and advertising concepts. She honed her meditation skills and continued to learn more about health and spiritual ideas, in part because her medical benefits were extremely limited after Tom’s loss. Becoming a vegetarian, Marguerite tried unsuccessfully to exercise at home in the early mornings to television programs or tapes. She hated it because she was always tired in the mornings. The highlights of her social life were her dinners with girlfriends and seeing her daughters. Her loyalty to Tom prevented her from dating, although men were obviously attracted to her.

Marguerite started to slowly gain weight around her hips, and those awful “saddlebags” appeared around her thighs. Her abdomen became bloated and she began suffering from bothersome gas and acid reflux problems. She began taking papaya enzymes (not a bad start) and continued her daily dose of selected vitamins. She even tried limiting the digestion-unfriendly foods she had read about – such as “night shades” and gas-producing broccoli – to no avail. She began to suffer terribly from a painful muscular disorder and no health technique or medical treatment she tried could ease her suffering. Lethargic and depressed, she was miserable with her “ugly, uncooperative” self. Despite all her best efforts to balance her mind, body, spirit, and emotions, Marguerite felt like all the information she had gleaned was backfiring on her rather than helping her. She’d exhausted all her possibilities and couldn’t afford any more doctors, tests, and prescriptions that didn’t really work.

Frustrated and terribly unhappy, but still stunning at 60 and barely looking 40, Marguerite was brought to my office by a dear friend, one of my long-time clients. Marguerite had heard of me and tidbits of my practice from her friend, so she was open to my approach. I was not the first alternative healthcare practitioner she’d seen, but with my blended methodology of Eastern philosophy and Western science, I was certainly the most unique.

I listened to her courageous story and did an extensive intake questionnaire. I then explained to Marguerite that she was not a vegetarian, because her body fit the Balanced Synthesizer Meta-type. Vegetarianism had been wrong for her, and had caused a carbohydrate insensitivity. This had prompted her power gland, the pancreas, to overproduce insulin, thereby causing her weight gain, low blood sugar attacks, and digestive problems. She really needed ample protein in her diet. Her least effective gland, the thyroid, had become even weaker through abuse and neglect, also contributing to her weight gain and her lethargy. In addition to the Balanced Synthesizer food plan and menu, I designed a Balanced Synthesizer supplement program for her. I also recommended that her customized, Meta-type-specific exercise program should be done in the evenings when her energy was high, since mornings were her naturally low point. Still facing insurance troubles, Marguerite was delighted that the food plan and exercise plan were all right there for her and added no new expenses. In fact, her customized supplement regimen cost no more than what she was already spending on her haphazard vitamin selection; tailored to her specific Meta-type needs, they would work more efficiently.

Over the next six months, Marguerite’s life was transformed. Her excess pounds melted off, revealing her natural curvaceous figure; her digestive issues vanished; the muscular aches and pains disappeared; her energy and beauty returned; and her depression lifted. Through our work together, she discovered how terribly lonely she had been without Tom. Even though she was longing for a partner, she felt disloyal since she didn’t have closure with him before he died. This repressed pain and stress had taken its toll on her as she was trying to start a new life and keep her girls physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy. She also had one of those “Ah-Ha” moments when she fully realized what an intense, creative, intuitive, and emotional person she was, someone who did indeed want – and needed – a life partner. Two years later she married Gene, an advertising executive she had met on one of her freelance jobs, and she still implements her Balanced Synthesizer program to this day.

“HARRY”

A truly brilliant self-made man, Harry tenaciously rose from deep-rooted lower-class beginnings until he could have been a successful English barrister. Instead, he took a position with a huge corporation, becoming known as its top negotiator with a challenging union. Rescuing the company many times from the union’s sometimes violent strikes, Harry’s reputation grew. Eventually, a middle-sized firm in the United States offered him a position in its Human Resources department. Believing this would be a great opportunity, he and his wife and two children moved to America.

Struggling with cultural changes, Harry did well in the new corporate environment, but it wasn’t quite what he had expected. Trying to settle into suburban home life in Connecticut, the children had problems adjusting. His wife decided to return to school and become a physical therapist. With her concentration diverted from home and family, Harry picked up the slack, and in many ways became “Mr. Mom.” His concentration at work suffered.

Not climbing the corporate ladder the way he had envisioned, coupled with the distress of a neglected home, Harry slammed into his own emotional obstacles, feeling tremendously inadequate. Thinking new goals would help, he took a position on the West Coast. Nothing changed, and the marriage began unraveling. At a time when he wanted to bolt and was consumed by guilt, they learned that his wife was pregnant. So he stayed for the sake of his children, now three in number.

Tragically, this youngest child died several years later and Harry’s grief was unrelenting. His view of himself and the corporate world collapsed. He became closer to his two surviving children, putting them before anything else. Bitter and depressed, he also mourned as the professional success he had envisioned for himself slipped away. He turned to extramarital affairs, hoping these easy successes would lessen his suffering. Not surprisingly, he and his wife finally divorced.

Harry spiraled into greater depression and devastating lethargy. His usual peak energetic times – late morning to early evening, then late evening – turned into empty caverns of hopelessness. He began gaining weight and devouring anything that came his way – food, experiences, women, even alcohol – whatever he thought could dull his pain. Beginning to lose ground in his professional life, his reputation suffered.

Stressful situations saddled Harry with bad colds, flues, and terrible fatigue. He even fell asleep in the middle of several meetings. He was restless and irritable. Still traveling most of the time for his work, the routine of jet lag, airplane food, business meetings, and hotels was taking a great emotional and physical toll on him. Discovering he had contracted tuberculosis while traveling in a third world country, he became very frightened. Seeing that Harry was unable to cope with his health issues, a co-worker suggested he consult me. This was something totally foreign to Harry’s traditional “corporate” belief system.

Harry first read my book, Your Body, Your Diet, and then decided to pay me a visit. He was fairly sure he had picked out his Meta-type, the Balanced Synthesizer, from my book. During our initial intake consultation I assured him he was correct. We worked together to turn his life around. He implemented his Balanced Synthesizer food plan and began a regimen of supplements I had designed to build up his immune system and alleviate his depression. During our treatments, I had suggested he enter into psychotherapy to help him handle the grief he held so tightly within his body and his heart. On his own during this period, Harry stumbled into a soothing and healing world of spirituality by discovering Unity Church. It brought a whole new meaning to his life. Diligently using all of his new tools, Harry was finally able to deal with his grief, to fully accept his life, and to live in peace. Today, Harry is the head of the Human Resources department of a large corporation. He is full of vibrant health and vitality, still very close to his two surviving children, and beginning a new life with a lovely companion, Claire.
